# The Key to the Pictures

**How to read them.** A person in warm light on the plain floor, with no label, is a human. A figure of cool blue light on a disc, with a name and a role above it, is an agent. White light is data; gold is a result delivered; amber is a warning, a slowing flow or a customer who may leave; red is stopped, or needing a human now. A glowing threshold on the floor is a gate. The aligner is the woman in the white shirt; the master is the older woman in the dark jacket; the Keeper is the man at the table.

| No. | Chapter | Picture |
|---|---|---|
6 | She enters. The quartermaster, a figure of blue light on his disc, answers; the wall forms behind him with only what happened overnight.
6 | Where are we? The vector’s journey as a path of light on the floor; every mandate in flight a white mark, the gold marks signed; the two of them standing at today.
6 | A reversible gate: a batch of five hundred prospects waits as a cloud of white points behind a threshold of light; she says the word and it opens. Unanswered past its period, it would have opened on its own.
6 | The signature: he reads the contract back; the page hangs between them; she signs. The one act only a human performs.
6 | A meeting: the aligner, solid and warm on the plain floor, with the whole vector around her, every agent labelled. Six agents and one human, and nobody has to be told which is which.
6 | Her clock is her own: a dawn terrace, tea in hand, the quartermaster beside her on his disc; half a world away the agents work on a customer’s clock.
6 | The connected boundary: the aligner with the humanoid, present twice, as an agent of light in the room labelled FLOOR and as itself at the machine beyond the glass. The hands have connected.
7 | The control room: the master before a floor of a thousand vectors, three red at her feet, the nearest red vector’s own quartermaster risen from its tile to explain. The agent belongs to that vector, not to her.
8 | The command centre at rest: four columns of light for profit, customers, employees and society, each with a gold line; the Outcomes as tiles, one amber and one red; the blue threads showing which feeds which; the Keeper with his two humans; the small tile at the end reading DOCTRINE 0 0 0.
12 | Selecting for intention: the four layers, declared, record, witnesses, live, as a single vertical chain ending at the tuner’s signature.
13 | The collapse itself: ten departments above, five Outcomes below with their vector counts, and two arrows, 1,000 to 100 and 1x to 4x.
14 | The ladder is gone: a ladder lying on its side beside a single vector drawn as a shaft going down, crossing the line of the company’s edge.
15 | The last six: five Outcomes collapsing into one, then one into one vector, with six figures in two rooms.
16 | Birth and death: the Keeper’s table with one tile going dark and one lighting, twelve lines apart in the record.
17 | The signature: one order drawn as a chain with eight seals on it, the fifth one red.
18 | The edge of the vector: one chain across three companies, two seals at each wall, and the days lost written along the stretches outside.
19 | The long road: eight stations, each labelled with what moved out of people, ending at the vector.
